Tuft & Needle Mattress Review

Tuft & Needle Mattress Reviews: The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

Tuft & Needle is a beloved manufacturing and e-commerce company built around the goal of redefining how customers shop for mattresses and sleep products. Founded in 2012, Tuft & Needle has managed to develop a strong consumer following and earned more than $100 Million in revenue in 2017. Tuft & Needle has relied on a quality product line based on their proprietary foam as well as savvy branding to get ahead, rather than huge marketing campaigns or partnerships. In fact, Tuft & Needle is one of the few companies in the “mattress-in-a-box” space to achieve profitability and national acclaim without raising any venture capitol.

Besides their lineup of quality sleep products for reasonable prices, Tuft & Needle may be different from mattress companies you’ve bought from in the past through their “mattress-in-a-box” model. This business model allows users to select a mattress online, have it mailed to them, and then enjoy a 100-night risk free trial with free returns. While this model may seem like a leap of faith, most Tuft & Needle customers do enjoy their mattress and choose to keep it beyond the 100-night trial. In fact, only 5% of Tuft & Needle mattress purchasers return their mattress.

Marked by their sleek and classy branding, Tuft & Needle now offers two mattresses at the Twin through California King sizes, a number of bases for their mattresses, as well as pillows and linens. In short, if you’re a believer in Tuft & Needle’s quality, you can outfit your entire sleeping area with Tuft & Needle products. One the best parts of Tuft & Needle is summed up on their site where the brand notes “we could sell our mattress for $3,500.” At less than a third of a top tier mattress price, Tuft & Needle offers many of the perks that come from top of the line mattresses, as well as hassle free delivery and returns.

The Good

Tuft and Needle mattress

With over 130,000 verified reviews, Tuft & Needle sleeper experiences with the brand are some of the most well documented among mattress e-commerce sites. Around 65,000 of these reviews have been left on Tuft & Needle’s own site, where verified purchasers have ranked their experience on a scale of 1-10 (with 10 being the best). A whopping 54,000+ reviews rated their experience with the highest possible marks. This means that roughly 82% of verified purchasers ranked their experience with Tuft & Needle 10/10. Extending “the good” slightly, an overwhelming majority of reviewers ranked their experience 7/10 or higher (93% of all buyers to be exact). This lines up with Tuft & Needle’s claim that 95% of those who try their mattresses decide to keep them.

So what exactly do Tuft & Needle fans like about the brand’s products? Below we’ve listed some of the most common “selling points” as documented by both purchasers of Tuft & Needle mattresses as well as professional review sites.

Takeaways

If you’re a fan of memory foam mattresses that are medium to medium-high firmness, you’re looking for top-tier mattress perks at a lower price, and you aren’t opposed to online mattress purchasing, Tuft & Needle could definitely be the right choice for you.

The Bad

Tuft & Needle mattress reviews

Largely due to Tuft & Needle’s incredible customer service, and product lineup that fits most sleepers, it’s hard to find many “bad” reviews of Tuft & Needle products. With that said, no one mattress brand is going to offer the perfect mattress for all sleeper types and preferences. And in the event you are in the minority of sleepers for whom Tuft & Needle isn’t really an optimal choice, we’ve rounded up some of the most common things sleepers find bad about Tuft & Needle. For our purposes we considered reviews of 4-6/10 as “bad.” We also incorporated Amazon reviews, of which a slightly higher percent were “bad” meaning 2-3/5 stars (roughly 5%).

What Customers Found Bad About Tuft & Needle Mattresses

  • Sinking feeling and warmness (common complaint among first time memory foam mattress sleepers)
  • Slightly too soft for firm mattress preferences
  • Slightly too firm for soft mattress preferences
  • Side sleepers likelier to find the mattress too firm
  • Some sleepers report lacking edge support
  • Some sleepers report their mattress wearing out quickly
  • Moderate off-gassing
  • Lacks structure compared to spring mattresses
  • Some buyers report that the mattress runs slightly small

Takeaways
The largest groups of customers unhappy with their purchase are those who have never tried or are not sold on memory foam mattresses, those who are side sleepers, and those who prefer notable soft or firm mattresses. One note is that even among “bad” reviews, many reviewers noted that customer service and the buying experience were top notch, but that Tuft & Needle mattresses are just not the right fit for them.

The Ugly

Tuft & Needle mattress

Less than 1% of reviews on Tuft & Needle’s site, and 3% of reviewers on Amazon rated their mattress or buying experience with 1-2 stars. While this is quite a small percentage compared to comparable mattress brands, it’s worth noting that if you feel like any of the below ‘ugly’ review reasons could apply to you the mattress may not be the best fit.

What Customers Found ‘Ugly’ About Tuft & Needle Mattresses

  • Sleepers over 40 in need of firmer mattresses should stay away
  • Small percentage of customers experience more extreme out-gassing
  • Mattress only lasts a few years
  • Those in need of firm mattresses often find T&N mattresses painful
  • Some customers note their mattress lasted less than 1 year
  • Some customers find the mattress unbearable hot

Takeaways
The worst reviews of Tuft & Needle products are largely for the same reason as the “bad” reviews, but given by reviewers with more clearly defined sleep preferences. For those seeking a truly firm mattress, particularly due to back pain or injuries, a medium firmness memory foam mattress may be quite a bad “fit.” For those who have not tried memory foam mattresses before, a small but notable percentage of sleepers do not enjoy the “sinking” into the mattress feeling, or the heat of the mattress. While these lower reviews could apply to any memory foam mattress, two noteworthy T&N specific bad review types regard the mattress not lasting and more extreme off-gassing for some customers.

The Tuft & Needle Mattress Price

Tuft & Needle Mattress Price

Historically Tuft & Needle has offered one mattress named (surprise!) the Tuft & Needle. Today, the brand offers a second mattress type called the Mint. While the Mint is a slightly upgraded version of the Tuft & Needle mattress, they both still occupy a middle to lower tier price point. Additionally, both mattresses play a role in the brands offerings. The Tuft & Needle mattress is slightly less firm, while the Mint has slightly enhanced support and cooling. Tuft & Needle also offers a full range of other bedding products. Most mattress related products for the brand come in Twin through California King sizes. Most major “mattress-in-a-box” retailers occupy a unique price point. Often at the low end of mid-tier mattress prices, many online mattress retailers offer proprietary mattress construction methods as well as the perk of not needing to go mattress shopping in person. Tuft & Needle is no different in these regards. While ultimately whether or not a mattress is a “good value” depends on whether or not you find your new mattress comfortable, an overwhelming percentage of Tuft & Needle reviewers find their mattress quite nice.

The 100-day trial period for the mattress also helps to alleviate some of the guess work as to whether the mattress will be a good fit for you. Additionally, roughly knowing the firmness level you prefer in a mattress, and whether or not you like memory foam mattresses will also go a long way. With all that said, Tuft & Needle offers two mattresses that do vary in a number of ways. Let’s take a look at the specifics of each to ascertain if Tuft & Needle is a good value for you.

Value Proposition of the Tuft & Needle Mattress

When looking at the original Tuft & Needle mattress value can be assessed from a few angles. The cost of a mattress is central to value, as is the quality of the mattress as well as additional perks associated with the mattress brand. We’ll look at all three of these elements below.

As far as cost, Tuft & Needle’s standard mattress ranges from $350-$750 (depending on mattress size). This is both lower than other “mattress-in-a-box” retailers and traditional mattress sellers. Where the price of a Tuft & Needle queen-sized mattress is $595, the price of other online mattress retailers are:

  • Casper: $950
  • Leesa : $940
  • Original Purple: $999
  • Ghostbed : $795

With a minimum savings of $200 when compared to other online mattress retailers, Tuft & Needle is hands down the most affordable major online mattress retailer. The savings are even more pronounced when comparing Tuft & Needle to traditional mattress prices. A “typical” mid-tier queen-sized mattress costs between $1,200-$1,300. High-end queen-sized mattresses typically start at around $500 more. As a mid-tier mattress with arguable high-end additional brand perks and service, Tuft & Needle provides an excellent value for those that like the mattress. Compared to a traditional mattress maker, one could save between $600-$1,100 purchasing from Tuft & Needle.

While no one mattress type is going to be great for all sleepers, Tuft & Needle’s namesake mattress provides a range of modern mattress technologies that appeal to many sleepers. Tuft & Needle’s proprietary foam starts with a firm layer and transitions to a softer layer. Less layers means less chemicals and more breathability. In the case of Tuft & Needle, the two tier system means the harder you press on the mattress, the more support it gives.

The entire mattress has been awarded the UL GREENGUARD Gold Certification and boasts CertiPUR-US® certified foam. A fire sock flame barrier (flame barriers are required on all mattresses) avoids harmful chemicals and has been certified to the level clothes that come into skin contact must meet.

Though a small percentage of buyers report off-gassing, Tuft & Needle’s foam and mattress construction provides very minimal exposure to chemicals you may not want to sleep next to when compared to other foam mattresses. Surrounded by a high quality cover certified to the same standards as clothes we wear close to our bodies, buyers can be sure of clean, toxic-free sleep.

A third crucial part of Tuft & Needle’s value proposition comes in the form of their amazing customer service and no hassle delivery and returns. Of the 10,000’s of reviews of Tuft & Needle, by far the most common positive reviews relate to easy delivery, returns, and customer service. While many online mattress retailers tout 100-night risk free trials and long warranties, Tuft & Needle backs theirs up with amazing and responsive customer service.

Value Proposition of the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress

Tuft & Needle’s Mint Mattress is an update on their classic, slightly pricier, and provides slightly more support than the original Tuft & Needle. Some of the major differences between the mattresses are summarized below.

  • The Mint Mattress is 2″ thicker
  • The Mint Mattress 30% more graphite for increased heat dispersion
  • The Mint Mattress includes an extra layer of support in an adaptive support layer
  • Slightly firmer than the original Tuft & Needle
  • 30% more cooling gel beads
  • More edge support

While the Mint Mattress is slightly pricier than the original Tuft & Needle, it still lines up with prices of other online mattress retailers. With a Queen-sized Mint Mattress priced at $895, it’s $50-$105 cheaper than all other mainstream “mattress-in-a-box” services besides Ghostbed. This means that the higher-end mattress by Tuft & Needle is $300-$800 more affordable than similar mattresses from traditional mattress makers. This makes both Tuft & Needle mattresses great values. And with two to choose from, sleepers preferring mid level and higher firmness levels can all be satisfied. With that said, not all sleepers will like the same mattress. And one small downside to online mattress retailers generally (including Tuft & Needle) is the smaller range of mattress to choose from. For most sleepers that don’t need extremely firm or extremely soft mattresses, it’s hard to go wrong with Tuft & Needle.

What Makes Tuft & Needle Mattresses Unique?

Tuft & Needle mattress reviews

Tuft & Needle mattresses share a number of characteristics with other mid and high end mattress makers and online mattress retailers. Their mattresses are made with memory foam, shipped to your door, allow a 100-night risk-free trial period, have free returns, and a 10-year warranty. These offerings are pretty standard among online mattress retailers. What really makes Tuft & Needle unique is their “above and beyond” customer service, a slightly lower price point when compared to comparable brands, and their proprietary mattress makeup.

Close to one in ten of the 65,000+ reviews from Tuft & Needle purchasers cite incredible customer service from the brand. Of reviews that talk about customer service, well over 90% left reviews of 9 or higher out of a possible 10. Particularly when you aren’t dealing with a brick and mortar store, knowing that you can count on amazing customer service at a distance is a real plus. While some comparable brands also have great customer service, none have seen such an amazing response through tens of thousands of reviews. Common reasons why purchasers loved customer service include the following:

  • Great communication about when the product ships
  • Immediate shipping of new products
  • Quick and easy access to support regarding mattress wear and tear, tips, and maintenance
  • A “no-hassle” policy regarding returns
  • Live person on website chat
  • Well designed box and mattress for shipping
  • Ease in changing order

As we mentioned in the Value Proposition of the Tuft & Needle Mattress section above, Tuft & Needle mattresses are potentially the most affordable of all popular “mattress-in-a-box” makers. For customers looking at the traditional Tuft & Needle mattress, they can expect to save $200-$400 when compared to comparable brands. For customers looking at the slightly higher end Mint mattress, they can expect to save close to $100 when looking at comparable brands. Factor in the highly regarded customer service and “no-hassle” return policy, and you’ve got nothing to loose in trying a Tuft & Needle.

Finally — and perhaps most importantly — Tuft & Needle offers a mattress you can’t get from another brand. Yes, you can find similar memory foam mattresses from online mattress makers. But with over 60,000 extremely positive reviews about Tuft & Needle’s proprietary foam mattress, it’s hard to deny that this mattress isn’t something special. For the traditional Tuft & Needle mattress unique design factors include the use of less layers than competitors, cooling the mattress down and leading to less chemicals and off-gassing. The layering of firmer, more supportive layers lower in the mattress means that the more you push on the mattress the more supportive it feels.

In the Mint mattress, a proprietary third layer is added, as well as cooling beads and graphite. This leads to the Mint sleeping slightly cooler than the Tuft & Needle original, as well as being slightly firmer and having more edge support. While the Mint is technically a slightly upgraded version of the Tuft & Needle mattress, there’s a place for both in the lineup as some sleepers prefer the softer Tuft & Needle original. Whichever way you cut it, Tuft & Needle mattresses provide a particularly comfortable feel at a good price point, and that’s what makes them unique.

The Tuft & Needle Brand

The Tuft & Needle Brand

Besides their quality customer service and high quality, low cost mattress, branding has helped Tuft & Needle stand apart from competitors in a big way. Over the 6 years of Tuft & Needle’s existence, they’ve made a name for themselves with both consumers and entrepreneurial communities. On the consumer side, Tuft & Needle’s compelling story begins with something all too common in mattress shopping: an overpriced mattress that under-delivers. Building off a key need to provide transparency, ease of purchase, and ease or returns helped to establish Tuft & Needle as a unique early “mattress-in-a-box” provider. By lowering prices on premium foam mattresses and highlighting ways in which traditional mattress companies bloat prices, Tuft & Needle has struck a chord with consumers.

One of the company’s first large branding efforts came with the buying of billboard space and tn.com. With billboards directing viewers to tn.com, billboards exclaimed “mattress stores are greedy.” Coupled with signaling on their site such as “we could sell our mattress for $3,500” and “many layers aren’t always better,” Tuft & Needle cemented their position as the anti-mattress store, mattress company.

Bootstrapped with just $6,000 in savings from T&N co-founders, Tuft & Needle managed to brand themselves entrepreneurially as savvy businessmen and as a company tackling a well validated need. Signaling faith in their company, Tuft & Needle eschewed a number of venture capital investment offers to retain ownership of their own business. With a loan of just $500,000, Tuft & Needle was able to build themselves into a $170 million a year in revenue company. Of course 2018 signaled a change in direction with the merger with sleep giant Serta Simmons Bedding. It’s yet to be seen what this merger will mean for branding. But initial announcements have touted Tuft & Needle’s ability to reach an even larger audience with their unique offerings.

One final way in which Tuft & Needle has branded themselves differently from other online mattress retailers is through a vigorous brick and mortar presence. Opening up their first brick and mortar location in their first year, T&N now operates a handful of stores themselves. Additionally, T&N have partnered with Lowes, Crate & Barrel, and a number of other design and furniture stores to make their products more accessible to brick and mortar shoppers.

The History of Tuft & Needle Mattresses

Tuft & Needle mattress history

Tuft & Needle was founded in 2012 after co-founder John Thomas (“JT”) Marino and his new wife set out to buy their first piece of furniture together. After being pressured by a mattress salesman to buy a $3,500 foam mattress with all the “bells and whistles,” JT and his wife were expecting great comfort in their mattress. Only the mattress didn’t work for them. Put out by overpriced products and a sales process that didn’t lead to fulfillment for the consumer, JT started thinking about how to change the way people shop for mattresses.

When JT reached out to his old co-worker Daehee Park (both software engineers), they realized they’d both had the same problems buying mattresses. Armed with only $3,000 each from personal savings, the pair set out to create a vertically integrated mattress company centered around redefining the way people bought mattresses. By the end of 2013, the company had generated its first $1 million in sales. During the next year, the start-up was a show out at IST Start-Up Week hosted by Pennsylvania State University. The company also opened its first brick and mortar showroom in December of 2014 in Phoenix.

In 2015, Tuft & Needle began to hit the big time. Generating more than $100 million in revenue and hiring more than 100 employees. A grant for a developer to repair the historical O.S. Stapley Hardware buildings at Grand Avenue in Phoenix also created an opportunity for Tuft & Needle to find it’s new headquarters.

As Tuft & Needle grew, they turned down multiple offers for investment in the form of venture capital. Instead, the founders opted to take out a $500,000 loan from Bond Street in 2016. Tuft & Needle also started to grow their advertising presence in 2016. Starting with billboards touting “mattress stores are greedy” and directing consumers to the mysterious TN.com, Tuft & Needle there began to pronounce that “many layered mattresses” are a scam.

Most recently, Tuft & Needle, which avoided earlier investments, merged with mattress giant Serta Simmons Bedding. With employees as well as the two co-founders being the only people holding equity in the company, many of the original workers for Tuft & Needle have done quite well. While the total sum of the merger was undisclosed, similar companies are often bought for 4-5x their sales value. At $170 million sales in 2017, Tuft & Needle could have been bought for anywhere between $200-$800 million.

In recent history Tuft & Needle has partnered with a number of brick and mortar stores to sell some of the brand’s products. These stores include Crate & Barrel, Lowe’s, as well as a growing number of Tuft & Needle’s own physical locations.

  • Metal Base

Tuft & Needle Bedding

Tuft & Needle offers a full range of linen or bedding products including covers, pillows, mattress toppers, duvets, sheets, and mattress protectors. Perhaps the most lauded bedding product offered by Tuft & Needle is their pillow. These pillows use their proprietary foam to offer cooling, durability, and support. In fact, Tuft & Needle tests their pillows to ensure over 10 years of use without significant decrease in support. Compared to competing foam pillows, Tuft & Needle’s pillow loses 40% less support over a 10 year period.

TENCEL® fibers coat the outside of the pillow, creating a breathable and hypoallergenic cover. Tuft & Needle’s sheets are also very highly regarded by buyers, percale construction and a 215 thread count leads to a long-lasting feeling of crisp, freshly-washed sheets. 100% SUPIMA® cotton grown in the USA is used to make the sheets, and they even come with a 2-year warranty. At a price inline with sheets of comparable quality, with a 100-night risk-free trial, buyers don’t have much to lose in trying out the quality bedding offered by Tuft & Needle. Finally, their mattress topper is a great addition for sleepers who want a slightly less firm feel (remember, their mattress is slightly on the firm side). The topper comes with a three year warranty, doesn’t bunch up sheets, and doesn’t skid on the bottom. Toppers are created with open-cell foam for breathability and a soft polyester blend on top.

Tuft & Needle Bedframes

Tuft & Needle offers three mattress support options including a frame, a box foundation, and a metal base. Each complement Tuft & Needle’s modern mattresses in unique ways. The bed frame is the most expensive option, but of exceptional quality. Created with heirloom hardwoods, the base is easy to put together, has a low profile, and has storage space underneath. Tuft & Needle mattresses don’t need box frames, so the brand came up with the stylish box foundation for those who want a little more height and support on their mattress. Pairing nicely with the metal frame, the box foundation is a stylish and minimal gray and perfectly fits any paired Tuft & Needle Mattress. The metal frame is the most affordable mattress support option from Tuft & Needle, and is bare bones. That’s not to say the metal frame isn’t still stylish. Black steel that doesn’t require any tools for set up is a nice addition to setting up a minimal sleeping space.

Tuft & Needle Pouch

The most unique accessory offered by Tuft & Needle is their pouch. While pricey compared to the “bean bag” chairs you might have had while growing up, the Pouch is built to provide support and last. Ever heard of a kid’s bean bag chair offering a three year warranty or 100-day risk-free trial? Neither have we. And that’s because Tuft & Needle put some thought into this plush chair. They don’t use beads, beans, mystery pellets, or pvc to fill the Pouch. Rather, the pouch utilizes Tuft & Needle’s proprietary foam to be soft while providing enough support for an afternoon of reading, or the watching of a movie. A soft quilted cover and easy to remove and wash exterior ensures this adult “bean bag” chair will stay looking good for years.

Where to Buy a Tuft & Needle Mattress

Where to buy

As with other online mattress retailers, the primary way to obtain a Tuft & Needle mattress is online. Ordering through Tuft & Needle is the only way to get the full range of benefits including Tuft & Needle’s amazing customer support, 10-year warranties (on many products), and 100-night trails (on many products). As with many mattress makers, one can also find their products on other online retailers like Amazon. While this may provide the perks of Amazon prime or reward points, one should double check to make sure that the warranty and other guarantees from the brand persist when buying from another party.

Tuft & Needle has expanded more quickly to physical retail outlets than most other “mattress-in-a-box” companies. Currently Tuft & Needle products may be found in select locations of Crate & Barrel, Lowe’s, Interior Define, Unruh, thisopenspace, as well as select Tuft & Needle stores. Tuft & Needle’s own stores may be found in Scottsdale, Gilbert, Seattle, and forthcoming locations in Raleigh and Kansas City. All other in-store locations to find Tuft & Needle products may be found here.
